Star City Entertainment Complex

Birmingham’s Star City mega leisure and entertainment complex has installed a network of MID certified energy meters and a Dupline® bus-based lighting control system; helping tenants save energy as well as costs.

Located 10 minutes from Birmingham city centre, Star City opened in July 2000 as the premier family leisure and entertainment Centre for the Midlands. With around 36,400m² of leisure space and 2400 secure parking spaces, it is one of the largest leisure complexes in the UK offering attractions including one of Europe’s largest cinemas, the largest Indoor adventure golf complex in England, a 22 lane bowling alley,all-weather 5-a-side football centre, open plan gym, Laser Station and family climbing centre. Funfairs, fireworks displays and other events regularly take place at Star City, including high-profile attractions such as the Chinese State Circus and Cirque De Soleil. It attracts 3.5m visitors per year.

It is a multi-tenant site on a grand scale, so it’s vital that each tenant is billed accurately for their energy usage. Energy metering falls under the scope of the EU Measuring Instruments Directive, and approval to MID is mandatory for meters used in billing applications. In addition, there is a requirement for monitoring energy use - implicit in Part L2 of the UK Building Regulations, which implements additional EU Directives aimed at lowering overall energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions.

The current network of 17 EM21s provide three-phase energy metering. Meters, comms ports and the network all proved simple to set up and could be configured centrally through PowerSoft.
